Ruhrpott (Ruhr Area)

Until a few years ago, the RUHR area (Ruhrgebiet) was one of the most essential
driving forces of the German economy, due to the coal, steel and chemical
production, as well as one of the centers of the workers’ movement. Many foreigners
found work in the Ruhr area, settled down and quickly became well integrated.
Over time, pollution from the chemical and heavy industries has become a major
problem. For economic reasons coal-mines were closed and jobs were cut. Solving
these social, economic and structural problems is an important task for the entire
region today.
